Climate change and overuse of natural resources pose serious threats to Europe and the rest of the world. Rapidly growing urban environments, coupled with changes in lifestyle and consumption patterns, require well-designed measures to ensure sustainability in development. To address these challenges, the European Union has adopted the European Green Deal strategy, which aims to turn the EU into a modern, resource-efficient, and competitive economy. The main goals of this strategy are to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, decouple economic growth from resource consumption, as well as to ensure that no individual or community is overlooked. In this review we aimed to demonstrate that Tagetes spp., a popular and widely cultivated ornamental plant commonly known as marigold, has numerous capacities which can contribute to achieving the goals of the European Green Deal. In particular, we show that marigold can be used 1) in public health system either as a traditional medicine or in controlling environment against disease-transmitting pests; 2) as a component of a healthy food chain; 3) as a source of natural compounds in transforming pharmaceutical and chemical industries towards principles of circular economy; 4) in natural methods of soil remediation, especially under conditions of rapid urbanization; 5) in sustainable agriculture with reduced use of resources. Overall, Tagetes plants can be seen as a natural tool to achieve the goals of the European Green Deal strategy in improving public health and preserving the environment.
